The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), on January 22, 2026, notified regarding the directions under section 18(1)(b) of the Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and the Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 regarding harmonization of classification of industrial sectors under Red, Orange, Green, White and Blue categories-Charcoal Manufacturing Units.
The following has been stated namely: -
• Reference is invited to letter no. SEE(HQ-2)/F.No.10/2025/10336-54 dated March 19, 2025, no. 11788-806 dated March 28, 2025 and no. 37739-65 dated 11.11.2025, whereby the CPCB directions dated 12.02.2025 and March 25, 2025, along with MoEF&CC Notifications G.S.R. 761(E) and G.S.R. 762(E) both dated 17.10.2025 regarding harmonization of classification of industrial sectors under Red, Orange, Green, White and Blue categories, were circulated for information and adoption/implementation in supersession of earlier classifications.
• Subsequently, PPCB vide letter no. 38985-39013 and no. 38869-96 dated November 24, 2025, classified certain left-out sectors under Red, Orange, Green and White categories. Now, CPCB vide letter no. CPCB CP-18/1/2023-IPC-VI-HO-CPCB-HO dated 16.12.2025 has issued directions under Section 18(1)(b) of the Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and the Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 regarding classification of Charcoal Manufacturing units under Green/Orange category for adoption and implementation in the State.
